• In a field experiment in the rural Philippines, mothers were reinforced for feeding their babies better using food available in the community. Babies in the experimental groups tended to lose less after 6 months of age and gained more from 18 to 36 months than a control group. High rates of illness limited the benefits of improved diets. Cultural factors such as learned helplessness, a reluctance to compare growth of babies, alternative explanations for poor growth, and a limited concept of prevention imposed alternative contingencies on the mothers to limit the effectiveness of a program designed to teach and support improved dietary practices.
