• This article examines the extent to which the military potential of the United States can be said to be contingent upon access to Canadian strategic minerals. In the first part of the article, the concepts of "strategic mineral" and "military potential" are analyzed; in the second, the author examines the pattern of Canadian-American trade in what he argues have been the three most important strategic minerals: nickel, oil, and uranium. He concludes that, contrary to much of what has been written from the "resource-nationalist" perspective, the United States is actually less dependent upon Canadian strategic-mineral exports today than at any other time in the post-World War II decades.
