The new Right's intervention in education is examined as hegemonic project designed to create a new consensus. The project is illuminated by contrasting two wings of the new Right -- the neoconservatives & the neoliberals. It is argued that the new Right aims to construct a debate on the central concepts of "freedom" & the "nation," & to marginalize the perspectives of the Left in education. The appeal of new Right thinking & the possible consequences of restoring the traditional academic curriculum are discussed. The neoconservative view of universal & community education is defined, & its assumptions are examined. Modified AA
