Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • Third-grade children were taught efficient use of a self-monitoring strategy in preparing for recall. 1 group was trained on both free and serial recall, others on only 1 of the 2 tasks. Control subjects received equivalent practice with the tasks, but no instructions concerning study techniques. On a posttest for maintenance and generalization given 1 week after training, trained groups used self-monitoring to a greater extent than controls on both maintenance tasks and on 2 of the 3 generalization tasks. Trained groups showed performance superior to that of the controls on serial recall and on 2 generalization tasks, with a nonsignificant trend in the same direction for free recall. Groups whose training had included experience with the free recall task showed more self-testing on maintenance tasks than did children trained only with serial recall. A follow-up testing of some of the children 9 months after training revealed high amounts of self-testing and increased recall among both trained and control groups.
