The North Frisians - who live in the German "Bundesland" [federal state] Schleswig-Holstein - are one of the smallest national minorities in Europe, constituting a minority in their ancestral land. The administrative district of Nordfriesland [North Frisia], established in 1970, has slightly more than 160,000 inhabitants. It is estimated that close to one third of them consider themselves as Frisians. Fewer than 10,000 people speak Frisian, an original Western Germanic language. The Nordfriisk Instituut in Bräist/Bredstedt is a scientific institution for the Frisian language, culture, and history in North Frisia. This article gives an overview of the institute's history, structure, and its variety of activities, mainly in the fields of documentation, language, history and regional studies, publications and public relations.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
