For years now I have used a simple exercise that I call the pebble activity to effectively disrupt a fixed participation pattern or at least make students more aware of their own class participation rate and how that affects the class. Over the years, I have learned a few tips to make the exercise run smoothly. * A seven-to ten-minute focused freewrite on the discussion topic before starting helps everyone collect their thoughts. * Giving rule 1 some weight by making it equal to a quiz or other class points is a good motivator. * The exercise is most effective when done in the first half of the semester.
