• Shakespeare and Impure Aesthetics is concerned to accomplish a number of objectives, and is the latest in a developing sequence of books in which Hugh Grady has sought to locate the various facets of modernity in the "early modern.\n Chapter 4 deals with topics such as "the demise of charity," the emergence of a "class war" as usurers secure for themselves the currency of power, land (101), enclosure, and the "mass expropriation of the English peasantry"(106), and the link between "performative representation" and "magic" that would need to be broken before usury could grow into a fully fledged capitalism (112-13).
