[...]his later Shakespeare translations cannot be understood as being a final version according to the principle of a "definitive edition"; rather, the different periods of his work with their different motivations must be respected. - First of all, a systematic sequence of manuscript and typescript writing cannot be validated for the corpus of translations of American poetry; among the translation papers there are quite a few typescripts that bear all the signs of volatility and of an arbitrary use of different writing utensils. After dropping the second "stopped" in the third version and trying "fand er sich bereit" /"war er gern bereit" ["death was ready to do something"] and "tats für mich" ["did it for me"] he reintroduces the verb "stopping" in the fifth version of the line ("hielt an"). [...]after having moved away from the literal level of the original line to his own poetic version, Celan rereads the poem and resumes a closer tie to the original at a late stage of writing. Since the synoptic and linear apparatuses are, all in all, less able to represent the distinguishing features of Celan's translation process, a digital edition realizing the concept of "hyperspace" and providing infinite, unrestricted informational space as well as the possibility to freely combine text and images (the witnesses) seems more promising than a traditional book edition.
