In these two publications we welcome the first comprehensive account ever published of research on an archaeological site in Malaya; moreover, in them is described the first attempt ever made in Malaya to undertake the reconstruction of an ancient monument on scientific lines. In the years 1936 and '37, in his quest for traces of ancient Indian or Indianised settlements on the trade route between the West and China, Dr. H. G. Quaritch Wales discovered and investigated over thirty sites in Kedah and Province Wellesley, most of them, if not all, of temple structures, these sites for the most part being concentrated on the north bank of the Merbok estuary which joins the sea opposite the northern tip of Penang Island.1 Although Mr. Wales' work here had been very comprehensive, it had by no means exhausted the possibilities of this region.
