Adrienne L. Kaeppler, "Artificial Curiosities" being an exposition of native manufactures collected on the three Pacific voyages of Captain James Cook, R.N. at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum January 18, 1978 -August 31, 1978 on the occasion of the Bicentennial of the European Discovery of the Hawaiian Islands by Captain Cook - January 18, 1778. In the Preface the author says that she first became interested in this subject in 1969, when she was doing research on the material and social aspects of the Tongan culture after Gook's time and was confronted by a crucial problem: 'There simply was no corpus of material documented as of undoubted Cook provenance that I could use' (p. XIII). Except for a group of 30 Pacific objects of unknown provenance, the remaining material derives from circumpacific culture areas in the north (the present-day Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Alaska, the vicinity of the Bering Strait, the Aleutian Islands, and Kamchatka) and the extreme south (Tierra del Fuego), and numbers 253 pieces.
