The way in which a piece of music ends is a core issue within the history of composition. The most commonly used categories discussed here are: 1) syntactical—when linear and/or chord progressions within harmonic theory determine the construction of the final phrase, as in clauses and cadences; 2) rhetorical—when determining factors relate to extended passages within larger compositional contexts, as in strettas or for a final coda after several movements; 3) poetic—when the character of a work influences an individualized ending (loud endings in tuttis vs. a solistic "fade out"); and 4) structurally, especially as it concerns post tonal music.
