• This thesis consists of four sections. First of all, the necessity of studying on the flame retardance of textiles was reviewed, as well as the recent studies on the thermal degradation of cotton with flame retardants was analyzed. Then the significance and purpose of this paper were also summarized. Forty-six references were cited. Secondly, cotton cellulose was treated with flame retardants such as inorganic compounds, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride(THPC), N-methyloldimet- hylphosphonopropionamide(CP) and synergistic agents. The flame retardance and thermal degradation of the treated cotton were studied by thermal analysis, IR, and limiting oxygen index. Compared with pure cotton cellulose, the changes of thermal decomposition behavior in the treated cellulose are as follows: (a) lowering in thermal degradation onset temperature; (b) decreasing in the activation energy of decomposition process; (c) increasing in char yield and limiting oxygen index. Thirdly, coordinate complexes of cellulose tr
