• Ernest Chausson had nearly completed his string quartet (1899) before his untimely death from a bicycling accident. Vincent d'Indy concluded the work by adding a small coda to the last movement. Chausson's writing, notable for the quality of its melodic and thematic invention, mediates deftly between Franck and Debussy, both historically and stylistically, although his intention was to evade their and d'Indy's influence entirely and return to the Beethoven paradigm. This aspired aim prompted fundamental simplifications in the music and an adherence to traditional forms.
