Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • The novel insists on Jewishness as mul- tilingual, non-white, non-Western, a challenge to Enlightenment univer- salism, and foregrounds the kinship between Arabs and Jews as twinned indigenous colonial subjects. [...]in the sequel to The Rabbi's Cat, the characters travel to sub-Saharan Africa, where they encounter embat- tled Black-Jewish communities as well as lost African Jewish kingdoms. What I suggest in conclusion is this: the teaching of Jewish literature needs to speak not only to our commitment to a multi-ethnic and multiracial society, but also to the reality of many of our students as multi-ethnic and multiracial individuals, contra the dominant current discourse of Jews as just "white folks."
