La Llorona, the bogeywoman of Mexican and Chicano folklore said to have murdered her children and who is doomed to wander for all of eternity as punishment for her crime. She wails at night as she wanders dark roads searching for her children or any other potential victims. Although the representation of La Llorona, for the most part, is in keeping with the spirit of the lore as a means of entertainment and eliciting fear, the producers and writers first whitewash her, literally, and give her an exclusively English moniker in order to usher La Llorona into mainstream popular culture. Here, Perez assesses the nonnative cultural artifacts that appropriate La Llorona as a subject.
