• A slowly increasing body of research addresses the benefits of pet ownership for persons with developmental and physical disabilities. Yet, the burdens of pet ownership in addition to pet welfare issues have received minimal attention. Cautious consideration of the best match of a pet for a specific person and family is recommended. Additional research including randomized controlled trials and longitudinal data collection will aid in a clearer understanding of benefits and burdens of pets for persons with disabilities. This chapter discusses the impact of pets on the mental and physical health of children and adults with different types of developmental and physical disabilities. Despite the high prevalence of pet ownership in the United States, the specific benefits of pet ownership for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities has received relatively little research attention. One study of adults with intellectual disabilities found caring for pets as a preferred leisure activity in the home.
