The authors integrate a discussion of various theoretical models of human-animal interactions and their explanation in regards to these unique relationships. Many definitions of pet ownership stem from the idea that pets are animals kept for no apparent utilitarian purpose, and/or provide long-lasting companionship or pleasure. However, determining what qualifies an animal as a "pet" within the family context becomes challenging when looking at the variety of culturally specific human-animal relationships around the world. Additionally, animals often play multiple roles in a family at one time depending on the perspective of the relationship, which further clouds the meaning of the term "pet".
