  • 82Circular Economy is a strategic concept based on reduction, reuse, recovery, and recycling of materials and energy, which overcomes the strict scope and focus of waste and recycling management, aiming at a broader action, starting from redesigning processes, products, and new business models and up to optimizing resource use (Duthie and Lins, 2017). By replacing the concept of end-of-life of the linear economy, new reuse, restoration, and renovation circular flows are created in an integrated process. The concept is not new, but it is gaining increased visibility when discussing industrial processes of businesses focused on sustainable production (Braungart and McDonough, 2013; Sadhukhan et al., 2020). Circular economy aims to develop new products and services economically viable and ecologically efficient (EMF, 2013), microbial polymers being included in this category, since they constitute highly valued products obtained from renewable and alternative carbon and nitrogen carbon sources. Rice industrialization is also an example, since coproducts can hold higher added value than the main product - the rice grain - and the waste can be totally turned into raw materials to obtain other products, including microbial biopolymers.
