This chapter focuses on phenomena associated with second-economy activity. Unlike observers who have assigned unequivocally positive value to Hungary's volume of small-scale agricultural production as a result of its contributions to standards of living and the stability of the political system, the people have focused primarily on the effects that these forms of overwork had on the (mental) health and demographic behavior of Hungary's rural population from the 1960s to the 1980s. In Central and Eastern Europe, there were several reasons for the prevalence of what social scientists call pluriactivity, meaning the diversification of one's sources of income. One important aspect of susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases was that financial shortfalls were a greater source of stress for men than for women. Compared to neuroses, alcoholism can be analyzed using somewhat more precise data, insofar as there are two reasonably reliable methods of estimating its prevalence.
