Joseph Stalin's death was followed by a period of power struggles, minor course corrections, and ideological concessions, but especially after Prime Minister Imre Nagy was forced to resign in 1955, growing dissatisfaction could be felt throughout Hungarian society nationwide, and by the summer of 1956, a manifest, almost palpable anticipation had electrified the countryside. In the period that followed, Hungarian revolutionaries took control of the country's more urbanized settlements and began establishing a system of institutions which actually reflected the will of the people. The ensuing Soviet invasion generated a wave of refugees, but the country's agrarian population made up only 7% of the 200,000 Hungarians who left the country in 1956. The "success" of the second wave of collectivization cannot be understood without an awareness of the social conditions in Hungary in the wake of the revolution of 1956.
