• Among gang researchers, there is a definitional debate surrounding the term "gang." While orthodox researchers have developed numerous definitions that center on violence and criminality, a growing number of critical scholars have called into question the existing definitions. The most commonly utilized definitions of the term (e.g., Eurogang definition) highlight criminality while actively ignoring structural- and societal-level factors that contribute to the rise and proliferation of gangs. This glaring issue is largely due to the exclusion of gang members in the development of these definitions. This chapter aims to address this issue by utilizing data from 30 formerly incarcerated gang members to develop a critical definition of the term "gang."
