  • The Republic of Maldives is a small island nation situated in the Indian Ocean and is one of the lowest-lying islands in the world, only a meter above sea level. Hence, the Maldives is in an extremely vulnerable position to the effects of climate change. It faces a serious risk of submergence. So, climate change has become an existential threat to ecologically delicate areas such as beaches, mangroves and wetlands with complete erosion endangering the food security of communities. Though at present there is no inter-state migration due to climate change but certainly there is environment-induced intra-state migration, that is, from atolls to the capital city Male in search of employment, education and better quality of life. So, in future, inter-state migration cannot be ruled out. The Maldivian government considers intra-state migration as an adaptation for its citizens. The international community is also involved in the Maldives' efforts in developing measures for mitigating the adverse impact of climate change and internationalizing the issue. The proposed chapter discusses the factors responsible for the environment-induced migration of Maldivian people and the policies and measures adopted by the government to deal with the likely impact of climate change on the nationals. This chapter also intends to look into the role of non-state actors to mitigate the challenges posed by climate change in Maldives. The Republic of Maldives is a small island nation situated in the Indian Ocean and is one of the lowest-lying islands in the world, only a meter above sea level. Hence, the Maldives is in an extremely vulnerable position to the effects of climate change. After going through a lot of references and field-based study reports on climate change migration in the Maldives, one could surmise that despite being the high economic growth the all-inclusive developmental remained a challenge in the Maldives, there is no migration from the Maldives per se crossing the sovereign borders of the country or persecution as defined by the United Nations Convention of 1951. Moreover, international nongovernmental agencies, like the International Federation, paid particular attention to the protection of over 6,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) by funding the construction of temporary shelters that met internationally-recognized standards.
