  • A third of the food produced worldwide each year is thought to be lost or squandered. According to estimates, 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted each year. Both wealthy and developing nations experience significant levels of food loss. The stages of production and retailing in the food supply chain are where it is estimated that the majority of food is wasted in most of the nations. The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on current movements towards more effective food waste valorization throughout the world. The first generation of food waste processing methods includes landfilling, incineration and composting. This chapter focuses on developing new valorization options utilized by various countries in order to reduce food waste. Additionally, a number of case studies highlighting the development of bioconversions in various nations through food waste valorization schemes are provided. Finally, challenges associated with the food waste management in different nations are discussed.
