• Given the considerable array of German documentary source material available for researchers, this chapter takes the form of a personal reflective essay on the research and teaching process one scholar has undertaken when using this type of documentation. A broad range of questions can be posed: How is a project dealing with perpetrators framed? How does one teach using perpetrator documents? Where does one find original material? Does one need to possess original language skills to be able to access this material? Was any of it in English translation? How does one know which documents are genuine, and which are spurious? What happens if one is denied access to any of the material being sought? What might be specific problems involved in using this material, and is it specific only to perpetrator documents?
