To support the theoretical and methodological foundations in Chapter 2, this chapter explains how the data in this study were collected and visualized for subsequent interpretation. Two elements key to this chapter are the creation and size of the study's dataset, which is over 1,000 assemblages, and the use of polygons to visualize the areas of potential movement proposed by each assemblage. Unlike network analyses of material data, or plotted routes or vectors of movement, the superimposition of these polygons fashions areas of the sea with greater and lesser densities of potential activity. Coupled with theories of human construction of places through densities of movement, these models may represent stages of the maritime cultural landscape of the Mediterranean sea in antiquity.
