A SYMBOL IS SOMETHING THAT STANDS in for something else. It can be a physical object, mark, or event that represents something more abstract. Symbols are part of the human communication system, which help us understand the world we live in, bring meaning into our lives, and organise complex information (see Complexity and MATBH: Metaphor). We do this by using symbols to link parts of our environment to more abstract ideas that include human relationships, belief systems, and socio-cultural values. Rather than naturally occurring elements in our environment, symbols must be constructed and learned by an individual or group. Constructed meaning can be ambiguous, however, with the same symbol having different meanings for different people depending on their socio-cultural background, prior experiences, education, and upbringing (see Diversity).
