• The post-militancy period in Punjab not only witnessed the return of moderation in Akali politics but also within the Akali Dal, Prakash Singh Badal's hegemony both in Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and legislative domains. Having suffered a debacle in 2009 parliamentary elections, the Akali Dal was much concerned with the Assembly elections in 2012. These elections were particularly important for Badal family to establish Sukhbir Singh Badal as a credible new generation Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and future chief minister. Having won the 2004 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party and crushing their rivals in Panthic politics in SGPC general house elections, the SAD looked ahead with confidence for the Punjab Assembly elections due in 2007. On the eve of the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, both Congress and SAD, apart from being engaged in decrying each others' leadership for promoting nepotism and corruption also got engaged in religious politics.
