  • With the installation of a popularly elected government and Union government's looking to that through the promises made in the Rajiv-Longowal Accord, there was hope of a new orientation in approach in dealing with militancy and resolution of demands. The new head priests led by Darshan Singh Ragi announced their decision to unite various Akali Dals and asked the chiefs of all Akali parties to submit their resignations. On 11 May 1987, without waiting for any final outcome of peace efforts, the government suddenly dismissed the Barnala government and imposed President's rule in the state. The Akalis led by Badal and Tohra, made the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee Executive Committee to sack Rode and other jathedars blaming them for Operation Black Thunder. As far V.P. Singh's National Front government was concerned, the Akali Dal victory presented several difficulties and opportunities.
