The partition of Punjab brought about the most radical change in the life of this region since the fall of the Sikh Empire. The leadership of the Sant Fateh Singh faction was dominated by rich landlords, many of whom had come from the Congress. The orientation and strategy as also the government reaction to Punjabi Suba movement now onwards was based on this changed position. Charges were also made about government interference in the religious affairs of the Sikhs. Thus Akali leaders presented the demand for Punjabi Suba as a necessity to get rid of discriminatory treatment and protect the Sikh culture. The Akali Dal while presenting its case for Punjabi Suba before the Commission, in view of its victory in Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee elections, further activated its movement at the ground level. The Maha Punjab demand was generally recognized as being primarily concerned with the maintenance of Hindu economic and political domination.
