  • The chapter functions as a kind of summation of all previous discussions and looks at how 'Byzantine' globalism was constructed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, demonstrating the sometimes misleading impact that this construction has had up to the present day. Reynolds demonstrates that modern constructions of what is now Israel rely heavily on a mixture of political pragmatism - a by-product of imperial colonialism - and evangelical and fundamentalist Christian rhetoric. This chapter shows the degree to which a global image of Byzantium can undermine traditional images of Byzantine political protagonism. This chapter shows the degree to which a global image of Byzantium can undermine traditional images of Byzantine political protagonism. Since the closing of the symposium in March 2017, developments across the world have made the theme of 'Global Byzantium' and its relationship to post-colonial debate seem even more relevant now than it did when the theme was first conceived in 2016. One of the challenges of Global Byzantium is how we as a discipline and global community of researchers can contribute to addressing these historic and contemporary imbalances in resource, connection, and opportunity within our own field, without simultaneously dominating the narrative. Beyond the discussions of the symposium, the theme of post-colonial Byzantium has also received lively commentary and study in recent years. Auja Hafir and the Negev provide an ideal lens through which to examine the relationships between scholarship and power that have shaped our understanding of the Byzantine past in the former province of Palaestina Salutaris.
