After a brief recap of variables discussed in previous chapters, Chapter 5 begins by acknowledging research stressors such as statistical and qualitative analysis techniques, data organization, and data security. It then turns to specific dilemmas often faced by researchers. The number of subjects available for a researcher is almost always of concern. The chapter argues for multiple data collections across different populations to understand whether findings converge. The next dilemma is the difficult choice of instrumentation, with the chapter arguing for multiple instruments to provide greater validity. Concerns about validating data collected are next followed by considerations of the time allocated for data collection. Finally, issues surrounding publication, including pressures from colleges and universities, comprises the final dilemma. The chapter then takes a forward-looking perspective by listing areas that should be included in the next generation of second-language reading research, including background knowledge, instruction, technology, vocabulary, and grammatical knowledge as areas particularly ripe for investigation.
