This chapter explores how indigenous dance activities index St. Lawrence Island Yupik and Iñupiaq perceptions of pleasure and well-being. According to the local people, Yupik and Iñupiaq dances bring positive images and feelings of social life, such as joy, excitement, pleasure, well-being and personhood. The concept of good performance in Yupik and Iñupiaq dance is related to their view of society, in which every person has a meaningful role in their particular niche and contributes to building the community. Why do Yupik and Iñupiaq dance performers are often recognised as role models and as locally recognised cultural bearers by indigenous peoples and non-indigenous peoples?
