• Why do statistics? Patients want to know what they can expect. Surgeons want to have solid answers to patient's questions. This book will help bridge the gap between classroom instruction and what surgeons want to provide their patients. We lay out a plan for the book and identify what makes this book distinct from prior (and very good) texts. We encourage an experimental attitude toward statistics and point out that results will fall into one of three general buckets: the effect you're studying is large enough to plan around, the effect is small enough you can ignore it, or we can't tell either way.
