  • The field o of technology has long been described using spatial terms – highway, web, platform, cloud – and as it becomes further embedded in our lives, the distinctions between ‘real life’ and life online continue to break down. But what might technology learn from architecture, and vice versa? Matt Jones studied architecture in Wales in the 1990s, and now works at the forefront of the tech industry, as principal designer at Google AI. In this interview, Jones reflects on how architecture has shaped his work, and asks how architecture might learn from technology-scale thinking to make a real impact. The field of technology has long been described using spatial terms – highway, web, platform, cloud – and as it becomes further embedded in our lives, the distinctions between ‘real life’ and life online continue to break down. Architecture is obsessed with the single prototype the most sustainable building, for instance which shows what's possible. Because often in architecture, when the people think of making a bigger impact, the people draw bigger things, like mega-structures. Editors Open source is one of those wonderful big ideas that comes from software, which has been exploited to some extent in architecture in projects like Wikihouse, for instance but it still remains largely untapped. There’s a huge potential in architecture for this software-style copying and learning, particularly in the legal, contractual or regulatory space. That foundation allows curiosity and wandering, it’s a fantastic base.
