• Until the architecture profession is more diverse, it can never represent the public it claims to work for. It is this which motivates Pascale Sablan, the 315th living African-American female registered architect in the US. Sablan is the founder of Beyond the Built Environment, an agency which provides a platform to support and encourage wider participation and representation within architecture, and curator of the Say it Loud exhibitions, which champions women and diverse designers. By holding up new role models, Sablan's work as an activist and architect seeks to redefine who we consider to be 'great'. The role of architects in community life today is largely irrelevant, as the profession has historically been, and continues to be, an exclusive resource serving primarily wealthy patrons. The Say it Loud initiative is an international exhibition that features projects by women and diverse design professionals, as well as quotes and video interviews on their experiences in the architecture and design professions. The concept of this exhibit is 'To see our faces, hear our voices, and feel our impact within the colourful tapestry of our heritage.' The Great Diverse Designers Library serves as a database to continue to elevate the contributions of those featured in the Say it Loud exhibitions. By calling them 'great', it addresses the challenges the search engine identified. The featured designers from each exhibition are added to the library, which now has over 225 profiles, making it a powerful resource for education and publication.
