• As the chapters of this volume demonstrate, the investigation of dialect writing can be approached from a number of methodological perspectives. All levels of language can be investigated – we focus here exclusively on phonological issues, and thus on the kinds of respellings that occur in such texts. With a qualitative approach (Asprey, this volume; Braber, this volume), we might observe a particular spelling and closely analyse the surrounding context. With a quantitative approach, we might analyse the proportion of texts in a corpus which contain a particular non-standard spelling (Cooper, this volume), or we might identify all non-standard spellings
