  • This chapter identifies African elements found in the function and performance of sport by introducing “Kemet-kA,” which identifies a sporting style and function that is unique to people of African descent. Although Kemet-kA could be used to analyze any sport that involves people of African descent, this chapter focuses on Africans in America who I identify as “Blacks.” Exploring the similarities between the sporting traditions found in historical African culture and those found in contemporary Black culture allows for a more critical understanding of the influence that “pre-colonial” African culture has had on the world. This chapter identifies African elements found in the function and performance of sport by introducing “Kemet-kA,” which identifies a sporting style and function that are unique to people of African descent. Kemet is the great civilization in ancient Egypt, where many of our modern roots in mathematics, philosophy, spirituality, technology, and architecture can be traced, well before the emergence of Greek civilization. The physical movement involved in sport produces a display of aesthetic and, therefore, can be appropriately examined by the Kemet-kA theory of analysis. Oppression has transformed the dimension of community relationship in Kemet-kA. The colonization of Africa and Africans has left Blacks suffering from the symptoms of oppression even. Black athletes have mastered the dexterity of their bodies and are able to artistically utilize their bodies in sport through various African traditions of aesthetics and spirit, Kemet-kA.
