  • Women who delayed motherhood have something in common with a particular kind of mother who does not value her daughter sufficiently to encourage her sovereignty. While the personal mothering style each woman had received was influential in developing a maternal self, mother’s style of partnering, including how she included father in the intra-psychic marriage formed by the parental relationship, was also significant in how each woman felt about being creative, sexual and female. The subject of delayed motherhood has gathered cultural popularity. The female body, as recalled in the narratives that follow, appear to have been neutered into performance of patriarchal values, creating both a fear of becoming a mother as well as the longing for it. Unconscious processes observed by D. Pines in a clinical capacity with fertility challenged women, found the repeated pattern of mother’s role to be both controlling and withholding, as if the adult daughters did not yet have mother’s permission to bear their own babies.
