Newspapers and magazines have heralded the ‘Death of the single girl’ and ‘Motherhood is the new sex’ to promote the glamour and status of the procreative potential within a committed relationship. Polarities of idealization and denigration are at the epicentre of delayed motherhood. This chapter aims to define the frame of late motherhood as a pregnant pause to claim the psychosocial phenomenon not only as a narrative shift, but as a new creation myth in the making. Delayed motherhood occupies a relationship to the past that is different from the past of younger mothers, as women who have delayed motherhood had to pass through the veil of cultural, societal and patriarchal expectations of what was considered to be ‘good’ and ‘pure’ for women. The national press has regularly reported on some aspects of late motherhood in pejorative and damning tones. ‘Fertility experts urge end to “selfish” late motherhood’ and ‘Late motherhood as “big a problem” as teenage mums’.
