• The mother’s perfectionist ideals not only created a split in her daughter’s femininity but also undermined her self-esteem and creativity’. A ‘second return to mother’ in Jungian terms is a return to an original identification with mother and comes after a long attachment period to father. ‘The anima too is a product of the patriarchy, as is the puer father who married the devouring mother’. At root, a second return is the profound change of a girl’s identity into a deeper appreciation of herself as an adult woman, drawing on previously learned qualities of animus gained through higher education and the workplace. The barrier for women in finding their feminine ground is rooted not only in how their own mother related, or cared for her female child, but what valuing messages father also gave her about her body difference and potential place in the world. Humanizing patriarchy’s masculine archetypes complements and heals the wounds inflicted by the patriarchal Mother Monster.
