This chapter discusses students' competence development in the context of an interdisciplinary user innovation course carried out within higher engineering education at the University of Vaasa, Finland. It describes how pedagogical choices affect the development of competencies and presents the course concept including course structure, content, and assessment of learning. The chapter provides the results of an analysis of the students' perceptions of their own learning of competencies and their best experiences from the user innovation course. It outlines some challenges related to the course concept and the potential of applying the approach to other elements of higher engineering education in order to prepare the students for meeting the demands of future engineering workplaces. H. J. Passow and C. H. Passow conducted an extensive systematic literature review in order to grasp the generic engineering competencies and their relative importance for professional engineering practice.
