• As people grow older, their neighborhood and immediate residential setting often become increasingly important. Although “old age” is a life phase of great heterogeneity and diversity, and lifestyles continue to differentiate, most older people fi nd themselves confronted with healthrelated restrictions and/or diminishing resources. As spheres of activity shrink and everyday journeys shorten, the relative importance of local services and activities increases. Socially disadvantaged older people in particular are frequently dependent on infrastructure close to the home for coping with everyday life, as they are unable to compensate mobility or health restrictions by deploying additional (economic) resources.
