• This chapter considers some of the views which writers, artists, poets, filmmakers, scholars, and others have expressed about Honorius Augustus down through the centuries. A brief of the central primary written and material sources that have been used in this book is also given. Tillemont was one of a long line of French scholars, thinkers, and artists – from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries – for whom the devoutly Catholic emperor Honorius was frequently a target for ridicule. Honorius has appeared intermittently in both cinema and television. Modern opinion about Honorius is near unanimously contentious. Olympiodorus is generally amenable towards Stilicho, particularly for his military gains against barbarian invaders. Coinage was a vital conduit for the transmission of government propaganda to the Roman population. The main difference between the two media forms – inscriptions and coins – was that the former were static, whereas the latter were geographically mobile. Though inscriptions were made of stone, metal, and wood, they fall into the categories of both material and textual sources.
