  • The economic thought of Czechs, as of other nations in Central Europe, was formed on the pagan foundations of exchange as a gift which obliges one and has a reciprocal character. From the pagan world to the state of the high Middle Ages, Czech society underwent a transformation comparable to that of the modernization of the 19th century. Daniel Adam of Veleslavin is the first in the Czech environment to elevate the significance of industry and uses as an example the English, who 'raised for themselves the most comprehensive industry of all the nations in the world'. In his view, every nation should process its resources at home. Comenius, the last representative of the specific Czech endeavour to surpass the Middle Ages by medieval means, attempts to find, methodologically and objectively, a harmonic fusion of a Christian-theological concept of the world with his constructive rationalism.
