• Self-awareness of an inventory of values and character traits permit individuals to assess their own stance and focus on educating others. Knowing the range of values and character traits enables individuals to consider the correct weighting of values and fit them with situations. Acting on the values depends upon personal integrity and the psychological capacities to overcome inner desire and exercise self-discipline for intentional ends. Integrity bonds to its moral twin responsibility. Faithfulness and daily courage prepare people to engage the daily grind, encounter opposition and find meaning and worth. Respect for self and work oblige competence to master knowledge and skills. Competence bonds with self-respect and a deep commitment to honesty and truthfulness that permits adaptation. The values and virtues enable accountability and transparency. Transparency makes possible honest evaluation of outcomes and helps stakeholder appraisal. Transparency, honesty, accountability and truthfulness build legitimacy, test whether purpose meets expectations and offset hiding and distorting information. They bolster inclusion, listening to diverse groups and integrating diverse professional frameworks. The values cumulatively contribute to being stewards of the long-term welfare of an institution and special obligations of efficiency and transparency that flow from taxed and donated funds. Managerial leaders embody stewardship of the ethical values and mission of the organization. Integrity depends upon a level of ethical and character consistency across the actions and growth of a person. Fidelity and courage align in small daily actions and in larger actions to build consistency and sustainable expectations into a culture. The idea of competence aligns powerfully with a commitment to responsibility. Respect can infuse all expectations giving them a strong moral cast beyond just webs of reliance. Truthfulness and honesty ally with a dedication to transparency as a critical ethical antidote to the tendency of groups and individuals to distort or deny information that might threaten their interests or agency. As a value, inclusiveness inoculates against the deep human tendency to be comfortable only with people who are similar. The financial and budgetary aspects of stewardship are critical responsibilities both for legitimacy and to achieve goals.
