  • This chapter explores controversies within two contemporary new religions where allegations of fraud and abuse of power emerged in their high-profile restaurants. The demands of restaurant work tested devotees' stamina and loyalty, hired outsiders' tolerance, and also their leaders' honesty. Contemporary new religious movements own and manage a number of restaurant and food businesses that serve the same purposes as the old Mormon trading posts: bringing in money, spreading their group's beliefs about food, and demonstrating their members' likeable personal qualities. Despite low wages and long hours, however, others gave Baker the benefit of the doubt, because they believed that their restaurant work had led them to a personal calling or a deeper understanding of service. The new Kansas City and Los Angeles area restaurants try to hire individuals who are involved with Landmark Forum and/or the Engelharts' related seminars on sacred commerce and building workplace communities.
