  • This chapter takes a closer look at the symbolic relationship between Orthodoxy and education. It provides an overview of the public debates over the teaching of religion that took place in the 1980s and 1990s. In the Ottoman Empire, the Orthodox Church, under the leadership of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, had a certain administrative authority over the Greek Orthodox Christians who comprised multiethnic and linguistically diverse groups. The 'secret schools' were supposedly run by the Orthodox Church under Ottoman rule, where clerics, supposedly illegally, taught Christian subjects how to read and write Greek, thus keeping the language and ancient Greek legacy alive. The chapter ends with a discussion of two sides of the debate regarding religion and education: a traditionalist one, according to which Orthodoxy is the foundation for Greek education, and one with a more open-minded approach attempting to set a new agenda for the values that should guide education, among them Orthodox religious values.
