Archbishop Christodoulos can be seen as the culmination of the identification between the interests of the nation and religion, or rather the instrumentalisation of religion in the name of the nation. The Orthodox Christian heritage and religious identity have been interpreted in different ways as the constituent features of Greek culture and national identity. Therefore, Greek national identity is an example of the equation of a specific Christian religious tradition with a specific people and territory. The cultural interpretations of Orthodoxy are predominant, with the exception of the religious organisations of the 40s and 50s that sought a more pious interpretation of Orthodoxy. The spiritual dimension of the Neo-Orthodox current was to a large extent eclipsed by its proposals for a cultural identification between Greekness and Orthodoxy. The negotiations on the relationship between religion and nation in Greece have been whether the universal values of religion can be used as expressions of an exclusionist national culture.
