• Mrs. Silverman spoke rapidly into the telephone, her voice agitated and anxious. “Do you know where Maria is? Do you know why she hasn’t called me? She’s not coming to work today. Do you know when she will come back?” I had no answers for Mrs. Silverman. She suspected Kathy Hirschorn, the supervisor at Belltower, was withholding information from her. Maybe I would be more forthcoming. It was a frigid Tuesday morning in February, and Mrs. Silverman had been without help since late the previous week, when Maria missed her Friday appointment. Kathy told her that Maria had injured her
