• A garment lifecycle is often visualised as a circle, ideally, a circle with several rotations going upwards. Environmental impact has historically been one of the earliest ethical issues relating to sustainability auditing and compliance in the fashion industry. The absence of apparent response by the general industry is highlighted by its leaders, some might say, the change-makers. The 'disposal' can be seen as an instigator for a new version of the garment from the initial design. The deciding factors include the garments' ability to be recycled and the engagement of the customer. The length of time from purchase to disposal is an indicator of the skills of the designer, as well as her or his ethical intent and that of the label, company or parent organisation. Donating garments to charity or recycling is a recognised method of disposing of clothing in the developed world.
